| Speeddating: mini bad dates (part un) |
| 07.15.04 (3:48 pm) [edit] |
This past Saturday, Ingrid, Darlene, Ruth, and I decided to do a speed dating event. For those of you who aren't techno saavy daters, speed dating is a relatively new thing. You sign up, show up at a place, meet a lot of other single people, and hope that one is somewhere between "what the hell, I'll see him again" and "oh man, i'd totally date him". Now notice I didn't include "her" because we all know guys don't say these things. For guys, and correct me if I'm wrong, there is only "NO" or "I'll do her".
Ok, so back to Saturday night. I got there first and sat in the corner checking out the competition and potential date pool. This is a list of the people who arrived in the order in which they arrived.
Samantha was already there when I got there. Travis (who wasnt there for the event but signed up later) Two ladies in their late 30's to early 40's wearing Sunday flower dresses with 80's shoes. Victor Lisa (who is 27 but looked about 35) Nicole (Toni Collete look-a-like) Mike and Jason Ramon Darlene and Ruth I stopped looking at this point
We (Darlene, Ruth, and I) decided to go to the bathroom to freshen up then down the hostess and to collect our date card and drink tickets. Tickets in hand, we headed over to the bar, naturally. By the way, the event was held in a bar in downtown. Convenient huh? The details are fuzzy here but I remembered seeing Ingrid walked in and we sat down with Travis (I ranked as "what the hell, I'll see him again"), Lisa, Samantha, Nicole, and Matt ("what the hell, I'll see him again"). The pre-event mingling.
Advice from Tnar: You should do one of these if you're single and if you decide to do one, bring a friend, or several. Ok first, why you should try speed dating. Everyone knows why you're there, to find a date. There's no pretension. Think about the last time you went out. You see a guy across the room, he looks over. You wonder, "Is he looking at me or my friend or looking for his girlfriend/wife/boyfriend ", "how long must I make googly eyes at him before he gets the point and come over here", "Is it too forward for me to go over there?", "Why is he pointing over here and laughing with his buddies?", and the all important question, "What if I go over there and he rejects me." With speed dating, he is probably looking at you and your friend (if you bring one), you don't have to make googly eyes, you can go over and talk to him, and he wont reject you right then. He'll do it online when he's choosing his matches. The important thing is, he won't be rejecting you right then and you won't have to see him ever again. As for pointing and laughing, I can't help you there, just make sure you dress well and check your nose for dangling boogers and your teeth for green stuff. Once you decide to try speed dating, remember to bring a friend, or two or three. They're great for moral support and you'll have something to talk about with them for weeks!!!
